Type

1. Arab Race horses will run in the Palio World Cup races from 2010 onwards. These horses are perfect for bareback racing as they are agile, swift around corners and intelligent.

2. Anglo Arabs will be used for the promotional races in 2010 and the first PWC season in 2011. They are bred for this sort of race in Italy.

Horse Welfare

• Organisation:

We will be working with World Horse Welfare.

• Requirements

Protecting horses during races:

Horses have to be five years of age by June of the year they run their first Palio.

This ensures that their growth is not disrupted by premature training and racing and that their ligaments and muscles are able to cope with the conditions required in bareback horse racing.

It also guarantees that the horses are trained and prepared for the Palio races over a sufficient period. In addition.

• Jockeys are not allowed to use whips or whip substitutes

• Jockeys are allowed to nudge horses with their heels, but kicking is not allowed

• Dangerous areas around the track will be protected with crash matteresses to prevent any harm coming to horses

Protecting horses beyond the races:

• The IBHREA racehorses protection found guarantees that each racehorse registered with IBHREA will, if injured, be looked after. If a horse sustains serious injuries during training, racing or travel it will be transferred to the IBHREA sanctury where it will receive professional care until it fully recovers. A horse with a broken leg, for instance, will be treated and retrained for recreational riding.

• Horses can not be put down without the clear consent of our veterinary team. If it is established that an injured horse can still have a comfortable life after injury, it will be saved at any cost.

Special track preperation:

• Difficult downhill areas and corners need to be fitted with appropriate angled construction to allow horses and riders to go around corners withou looksing their traction

• The track needs to be prepared with a 13cm thick and compressed sand/clay
